Chapter 11 (Gulf Coastal Plains And Mississippi Valley)

Chapter 11 has a section on Shipbuilding and River Cities. I can relate this to Philadelphia because they also have shipbuilding on the Delaware River. The books talks about how the Mississippi River's largest cities were founded when water traffic was the dominant means of transportation. Historically Texas and Mississippi built ships, but only the Mississippi operations continued. The largest employer in Mississippi is Ingalls Shipbuilding.

no business, industry, or institution illuminates the history of the Greater Philadelphia region from the seventeenth century to the present day more clearly than shipbuilding and shipyards. - See more at: http://philadelphiaencyclopedia.org/archive/shipbuilding-and-shipyards/#sthash.737JoOx5.dpuf

No business, industry, or institution illuminates the history of the greater Philadelphia region from the seventeenth century to the present day more clearly then shipbuilding and shipyards. The first settlers of Penn's colony turned to shipbuilding as a major industry because they found an abundant supply of trees. Demand for merchant ships created a flurry of shipbuilding along the Delaware riverfront. By 1720, there were at least a dozen shipyards in Philadelphia and the surrounding waterfront producing wooden sailing ships of up to 300 tons. The Aker Philadelphia Shipyard was founded in 1996. The yard targets producing ships within the Jones Act for domestic shipping, primarily product tankers and container ships.

Below is on of the oldest ships that were built in Philadelphia. It is still standing till this day.
